And so it begins...

Before the Germans invaded, we thought we were poor, but we didn't know poor.  We know poor now, that's for sure. All I keep thinking about is the food we used to eat, bread, potatoes, sausage, the list could go on.  Now we are lucky if we can eat a piece of bread. It is hard to stay warm and we are freezing! People are tearing down parts of their houses to burn just so they can stay warm. Leningrad, my home has been destroyed, there are no more pigeons because people have eaten them and people can't feed their pets anymore, so we eat them.  I never thought that this would be my life.

Because the war has begun it has caused my family to be apart. My mother and sister have left, they went to Vyazma to stay with my uncle.  I decided that it was best for me to stay here, I need and want to defend my city. My mother was very upset that I didn't go with them, but I feel it is my duty to stay. I am not sure if I will ever see my family again, my mother thinks it is a stupid decision for me to stay, and I don't blame her.  This could turn out bad. 

Last night me, Oleg and Vera were on the roof of the apartment and we saw a man falling from the sky. We realized that it was coming towards us.  When he fell to the ground we rushed towards him. He was a German soldier.  We thought that maybe he had some food on him that we could take. We knew that it would be risky to touch this soldier because if we were caught, we could be shot. I needed to take the risk, I was starving and I had nothing left. We searched the solder and he had some cognac on him and a knife.  I stole the knife, but it was too late, the GAZ was coming towards us.  We started to ran, but I did not make it far enough and they caught me.  Vera and Oleg got away, neither of them looked back when they saw I didn't make it.  Some friends they are. 

When they caught me, I swear they were going to shoot me, but instead they put me into their car and said that I was good for the colonel.  What does that mean?
